Germany has opened admissions for PhD programmes at universities across the country for international students, including applicants from Pakistan. Eligible candidates can apply for a fully funded scholarship offered through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
The scholarships, funded primarily by the German Federal Foreign Office through the DAAD, support candidates undertaking a full doctoral programme in Germany or a jointly supervised “Cotutelle” PhD between a German institution and a university in another country.
Successful applicants receive a monthly stipend of €1,400, along with health, accident and personal liability insurance, travel support, a €460 annual study and research allowance, and access to German language courses. Depending on individual circumstances, recipients may also qualify for rent assistance, family allowances or additional support for disabilities or chronic illnesses.
Applicants are expected to demonstrate outstanding academic performance and strong research potential. Most candidates must hold a master’s degree or an equivalent qualification, although limited exceptions may apply for applicants with a bachelor’s degree.
The programme also requires applicants to secure academic supervision from a German university or research institution capable of supporting their doctoral research. In the case of jointly supervised doctorates, an additional supervisor from the partner institution is also required.
German language proficiency is only mandatory if the doctoral programme and examinations are conducted in German.
Application deadlines vary by country. While the general deadline for many countries falls in October, applicants from Pakistan are required to submit their applications by April 1 each academic year.
