PTI protest case: DIG Islamabad sentenced to jail

DIG Islamabad sentenced to jail

An Anti-Terrorism Court in Islamabad on Tuesday has sentenced DIG Islamabad Jawad Tariq to one month in jail and imposed a fine of Rs100,000.

The court took action over the failure to submit the challan in a case linked to PTI’s protest on October 4, 2024.

Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra expressed displeasure over repeated delays despite multiple notices issued to the police.

He noted that the investigation report was not submitted in time, which caused unnecessary delay in proceedings.

The DIG also did not appear before the court despite being summoned.

The court then announced the punishment of one month imprisonment along with the fine.

The case relates to a protest held on October 4, 2024, which led to the registration of a criminal case against PTI leaders and protesters at Margalla Police Station in Islamabad.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf held the protest at D-Chowk, demanding the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The party also raised concerns over alleged election rigging and proposed constitutional amendments.

The demonstration saw a heavy government crackdown and clashes. Several party workers and senior leaders were arrested or nominated in cases for violating restrictions.
