The Punjab Traffic Police has introduced special arrangements to make it easier for students to obtain motorcycle driving licenses following the Punjab government’s announcement to provide 100,000 electric bikes to students.
DIG Traffic Punjab has directed all Chief Traffic Officers (CTOs) and District Traffic Officers (DTOs) to facilitate students at licensing centres and make the license process easier for both male and female students.
According to the spokesperson for the e-bike scheme, more than 222,000 motorcycle driving licenses have been issued in just eight days, while over 6,500 juvenile driving permits have been issued during the current month.
Under the new arrangements, students will be able to obtain both their motorcycle learning and regular driving licenses on the same day.
The special facility is particularly important for students interested in the Punjab government’s electric bike scheme, as they will no longer have to wait 42 days after obtaining a learning license before applying for a regular motorcycle license.
A valid driving license is mandatory for students seeking to benefit from the e-bike scheme.
DIG Traffic Punjab has also instructed officials to ensure the best possible arrangements for students visiting licensing centres.
The traffic police official urged students to receive proper training in safe driving and become responsible and confident riders before taking to the roads.
Yesterday, Lahore Traffic Police warned drivers that they could face criminal cases if they are caught driving with a suspended licence, as authorities step up action against serious road traffic offences.
Lahore Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi said the licences of 146 drivers involved in fatal and serious accidents have already been suspended.
Under the latest measures, the licence of any driver found responsible for a fatal or serious non-fatal accident will be suspended. In cases involving irresponsible driving, the suspension will remain in place for at least one year, according to the traffic police.
Drivers involved in fatal accidents could also face further legal action. However, licence suspensions in fatal accident cases will be subject to court orders.
