A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale was felt in several northern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It caused concern among residents and prompting many people to leave their homes and workplaces as a precaution.
The tremors were experienced in various areas, including Swat, Chitral, Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Shangla, Buner, and nearby parts of the Malakand region.
According to information provided by the Seismological Centre, the earthquake originated in the Hindu Kush mountain range located in neighbouring Afghanistan.
The Hindu Kush region is known for frequent seismic activity because it lies near the boundary of major tectonic plates, making earthquakes a relatively common occurrence in the area.
Officials stated that the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.3 and occurred at a significant depth beneath the Earth’s surface. Its focal depth was recorded at approximately 191 kilometres. The tremors were felt across a wider geographical area because of their depth, even though the shaking was generally less intense than that of a shallower earthquake of similar magnitude. Although it did create fear among residents in the affected districts.
Reports from various towns indicated that people temporarily gathered in open spaces and streets until the tremors stopped. The sudden movement caused anxiety among residents, particularly in areas that have previously experienced earthquake-related disasters.
However, authorities reported no immediate loss of life, injuries, or major damage to buildings and infrastructure. Emergency services and local administrations monitored the situation closely to ensure public safety and assess any possible impact.
Officials continued to advise citizens to remain aware of safety procedures during seismic events and to follow guidance issued by disaster management authorities.
Overall, the latest earthquake serves as a reminder that northern Pakistan remains vulnerable to seismic activity due to its proximity to active geological fault systems and earthquake-prone mountain ranges.
