Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that government employees up to BPS-16 will be provided electric bikes on easy instalments, as part of efforts to promote eco-friendly transportation.
The announcement was made during a high-level meeting chaired by the prime minister to review the progress of electric vehicle (EV) adoption in the country.
Officials briefed the meeting that the government is targeting a shift of 30% of vehicles to electric power within the next five years, a move expected to save around $4.5 billion in fuel imports.
The prime minister directed authorities to speed up initiatives aimed at expanding EV adoption nationwide, highlighting its importance in reducing the import bill, protecting the environment, and strengthening energy security amid evolving regional challenges.
He also emphasised ensuring transparency in subsidies provided for electric motorbikes under the National EV Policy and called for faster implementation of the scheme.
During the briefing, it was revealed that 72 manufacturing certificates have been issued for electric motorcycles and rickshaws, along with four for electric cars, while 123 applications have been submitted for setting up EV charging stations across the country.
