Electricity tariff may rise by Rs2.52 per unit in Pakistan

Electricity consumers in Pakistan could face another increase in power bills as the tariff may rise by Rs2.52 per unit for one month.

The proposed increase is linked to the monthly fuel cost adjustment (FCA) for July 2026.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is scheduled to hear a request submitted by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA).

NEPRA to review Rs2.52 per unit increase

Electricity generation from several imported fuels remained expensive during July.

  • Power produced using diesel cost as much as Rs50 per unit during the month
  • Electricity generated from imported coal was even more expensive, cost reached up to Rs54.47 per unit
  • Electricity produced from imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) cost Rs47.37 per unit

These fuel costs are submitted for consideration under the July monthly adjustment.

However, the proposed Rs2.52 increase has not yet received final approval.

NEPRA will first hear the CPPA’s request and examine the information submitted by the power sector. The decision on the proposed tariff adjustment will be announced afterwards.

Earlier on August 7, NEPRA approved an increase of Rs0.75 per unit under the monthly fuel cost adjustment, related to electricity generated during June 2026 and also applied to K-Electric consumers.

NEPRA directed that the June adjustment should appear in electricity bills issued during August.

The CPPA had previously requested a greater increase of Rs1.20 per unit for the June adjustment. However, NEPRA eventually approved a lower increase of Rs0.75 per unit.

Smart meter installations

Moreover, previously, more than 2.1 million smart electricity meters were installed across Pakistan. The details were presented before the Senate.

The Ministry of Energy submitted a written response during a Senate session chaired by Presiding Officer Shahadat Awan. The ministry provided details about smart meter installations by power distribution companies across the country.

A total of 2,125,296 smart meters have been installed by electricity distribution companies so far.
