More than 2.1 million smart electricity meters have been installed across Pakistan. The details were presented before the Senate.
The Ministry of Energy submitted a written response during a Senate session chaired by Presiding Officer Shahadat Awan. The ministry provided details about smart meter installations by power distribution companies across the country.
A total of 2,125,296 smart meters have been installed by electricity distribution companies so far.
LESCO leads smart meter installations
- Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has installed the highest number of smart meters. It has installed 1,153,556 meters, which is more than half of the total installations reported across the country
- Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) is in second place with 348,135 smart meters
- Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) has installed 229,719 meters
- Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has installed 119,372 smart meters
- Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) has installed 111,948 meters
Smart meters installed across other regions
- Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) has installed 60,685 smart meters
- K-Electric has installed another 50,599 meters in its service areas
- Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) has installed 19,620 smart meters
- Sukkur Electric Power Company (SEPCO) has installed 13,432
- Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) has installed 9,194 meters
- Hazara Electric Supply Company (HAZECO) has installed 7,659 smart meters
Additionally, Tribal Electric Supply Company (TESCO) reported the lowest number of installations. It has installed only 1,377 smart meters so far.
Smart meters are designed to provide more accurate electricity consumption data. They can also help power companies improve billing and monitor electricity use more effectively.
The government has been working to modernise the country’s electricity distribution system.
