Pakistan in deep trouble against England on day 1 of First Test

The start of the second day of the first Test between Pakistan and England at Headingley was delayed on Thursday following heavy rain which prevented them from starting in Leeds.

The players could not get on the field in the early morning due to the wet conditions that persisted during the day.

Ground staff were on standby waiting for weather to improve and an opportunity to prepare outfield for play.

The delay follows an affected day 1, where England took a strong lead as a result of the rain.

Pakistan got bowled out for 171 in their first innings with fast bowlers Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue of England claiming five wickets each.

Robinson also dominated, dismissing Pakistan opener Azan Awais on the very first delivery and went on to pick up 5-wickets for 51 runs in the match. Tongue’s stats in the first innings were 5-46.

Abdullah Shafique scored 61 runs for the Pakistanis while Imam-ul-Haq managed 42, but the England fast bowlers did a great job of exploiting the conditions to get the visitors out in 49 overs.

England then got off to a decent start in batting but lost two wickets.

Ben Duckett and debutant Emilio Gay put on 36-runs before Mohammad Abbas and Mohammad Ali took two wickets in two consecutive overs.

England finished on 112 for two and 59 shy of Pakistan’s first innings score.

Joe Root, captain of the England team, was unbeaten on 37 while Jordan Cox was on 23.

Thursday’s attention is thus on when play can resume.

England are currently in a dominant position while Pakistan are hoping their bowlers can begin to make early breakthroughs as soon as the weather permits the start of the second day’s action.
