Afghan Taliban's claim of airstrike in Kohat is fabricated: Fact check

Claims circulating on social media by the Taliban Ministry of Defence and reported by TOLO News about a supposed Afghan airstrike on Pakistani military targets in Kohat are false.

The claim stated that the Afghan Air Force carried out retaliatory drone or airstrikes on March 13, 2026, targeting strategic locations in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The alleged targets included a military fortress, a war command centre, the fortress commander’s office, depots and soldiers’ quarters, reportedly causing heavy human and material losses.

However, Pakistan’s Ministry of Information & Broadcasting fact-checked the story and the reality was different.

According to details, militants linked to the Afghan Taliban attempted to carry out an attack using three rudimentary drones in Kohat on March 13. The drones were successfully intercepted and brought down by the Pakistan Armed Forces using electronic warfare countermeasures.

Authorities said two civilians were injured after debris from the downed drones fell in nearby areas.

Initial analysis reveals that the objects are suspected to be off-the-shelf, observation type drones modified to carry some explosive. The Taliban later claimed responsibility.

They also said that statements issued by the Taliban defence authorities and affiliated channels have previously been accused of spreading inaccurate information and propaganda.

Verdict

The claim by the Afghan Taliban’s defence ministry and reports circulated by TOLO News about an Afghan airstrike in Kohat are fabricated. Officials say the narrative appears to portray a false image of military success and mislead the Afghan public.

Pakistan’s law enforcement and armed forces remain vigilant and continue to counter threats with professionalism and precision.
