Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) Chief Fazlur Rehman has announced the formation of a united opposition following an important meeting with Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai. Maulana Fazlur Rehman met Mahmood Khan Achakzai in his chamber at Parliament House.
The JUI delegation included Senator Kamran Murtaza and Maulana Wasay, while Achakzai was accompanied by Akhunzada Hussain Yousafzai and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Fazlur Rehman said consultations had been held with opposition leaders in both the Senate and the National Assembly.
He said it had been agreed in principle that all opposition parties should unite on a single platform. He said the alliance would aim to play a strong and coordinated parliamentary role. Further consultations and meetings would continue, he added, expressing hope that the initiative would prove to be a positive beginning.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman also called for creating a conducive environment for holding an All Parties Conference (APC) of opposition parties. Fazlur Rehman said the meeting marked the first round of consultations among opposition parties, during which it was decided to work towards forming a united opposition. He added that further consultations would be held in the coming days. Regarding the participation of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Fazlur Rehman said that the PPP is currently part of the government, while their discussions are focused on opposition parties. He added that the matter should be discussed at an All Parties Conference (APC).
On the other hand, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) delegation met with National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, where various matters were discussed. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also attended the meeting. The PPP delegation included former National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf, Senator Sherry Rehman and Senator Saleem Mandviwalla.
According to sources, the meeting covered several issues between the government and the PPP, including matters related to legislation. The two sides also discussed the procedure for conducting National Assembly proceedings and agreed to maintain a positive and conducive atmosphere during the sessions.
