Sindh govt approves fuel subsidy for fishermen

The Government of Sindh has approved a fuel subsidy package of Rs515 million for fishermen, according to the reports on Wednesday. The step is expected to support them due to rising diesel prices.

The decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister (CM) of Sindh, Murad Ali Shah.

The chief minister said this subsidy is a one-time payment. It will cover two months of fuel costs. He said that high diesel prices have reduced fish production by 20 per cent. This has also affected the income of many workers, according to the reports.

Who can benefit

The scheme will support 9,634 registered fishing boats. These boats operate in Karachi, Thatta, Sujawal, and Badin. The focus is on small and coastal fishermen.

Under the plan, 2,331 small boats will receive Rs0.2 million each. These boats are between 18 and 24 feet long and use 20-horsepower engines. A total of Rs466.2 million has been set aside for this group.

Another 488 smaller boats will receive Rs0.1 million each. These boats are between 10 and 15 feet long and use 5 to 10 horsepower engines. A total of Rs28.8 million will be spent on them.

Sindh Fisheries Minister Muhammad Ali Malkani said the payments will be made through digital systems. This will help make sure of transparency in the process.

How to apply

He said that boat owners must register online with the Directorate General of Marine or the Karachi Fisheries Harbour Authority. After registration, the money will be sent directly to their bank accounts.

Officials said the whole process will be monitored by a joint committee of the Livestock and Fisheries Department.
