People involved in criminal activities will no longer be allowed to operate online ride services as a new security system has been introduced for online taxi platforms in Lahore.
Punjab Police has made police character certificates mandatory for individuals seeking to work as online taxi drivers.
According to DIG Faisal Kamran, an agreement has been signed between Lahore Police and online taxi companies under which no ride hailing company will be allowed to register individuals with a criminal record on their applications.
Under the agreement with Punjab Police, ride hailing companies will now be required to obtain police character certificates from all applicants before allowing them to become online taxi drivers through their apps.
A new security framework has officially been introduced for online taxi services in Lahore. Faisal Kamran said that an important agreement had been finalised between Lahore Police and online taxi companies and made police verification compulsory for every driver before recruitment.
He added that complete data of all online taxi drivers has now been linked with the police database, while ride-hailing companies have been instructed to fully implement the new security policy.
The move comes after several criminal incidents involving passengers using app based ride services. Police said the measures were necessary for public safety, while ride-hailing companies have also agreed to fully cooperate with authorities to ensure the protection of citizens.
Islamabad to tackle traffic congestion
To address the increasing traffic congestion in Islamabad, the federal capital is all set to get two new avenues.
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) announced plans to restart the long delayed 10th Avenue project and expedite the construction of 11th Avenue.
The project was announced to deal with an anticipated increase in vehicles once a new link road connecting Margalla Road to the M-1 Motorway is completed.
