Heatwave alert issued for Central, Upper Sindh

The Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave alert for central and upper Sindh, warning that the intense hot weather conditions may persist until May 3.

According to the latest forecast, temperatures in the affected regions are expected to remain 4 to 6 degrees Celsius above normal, intensifying the heat across multiple districts.

Areas most impacted by the heatwave include Jamshoro, Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, Kashmore, Ghotki, Sanghar, Khairpur, Naushahro Feroze, Jacobabad, Larkana, and Sukkur. Authorities have advised residents to take precautionary measures as the extreme weather conditions continue.

Regarding the provincial capital, Karachi, the Meteorological Department stated that while daytime temperatures will remain high, there is currently no heatwave expected in the city. The maximum temperature in Karachi is likely to reach up to 36°C.

Authorities and medical experts have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun and to take precautionary measures. They recommend drinking plenty of water and keeping the head covered to prevent heatstroke.

Meanwhile, a leading environmentalist has warned residents of southern Punjab, Karachi, and other parts of Sindh to take extra precautions in view of the upcoming heatwave, as temperatures in May are expected to remain extremely high, ranging between 44°C and 47°C.

Speaking to a local television channel, Dr Zulfiqar, an environmental and climate research expert, said a heatwave is likely to affect southern Punjab in May, while extreme temperatures are already being experienced in Sindh and Karachi. He added that light rainfall may occur on May 4 and 5; however, overall weather conditions are expected to remain hot from May to June, with below-normal rainfall during this period. He warned that this could lead to rising temperatures and increased risks for residents.

Dr Zulfiqar urged citizens to take precautionary measures as soon as the heatwave begins, stay hydrated, and try to remain in cool environments. He advised avoiding unnecessary outdoor activities during peak daytime hours, wearing light clothing, and ensuring adequate fluid intake to prevent heat-related illnesses. He also emphasised that children, the elderly, and individuals with health conditions require special care during extreme heat.
