BADALONA: Heavy rain has resulted in serious flooding in Badalona and the metropolitan area of Barcelona in the north.
A flood alert was issued to the region when heavy and prolonged downpours were recorded by the Civil Protection authorities in the region.
Emergency services have therefore been on the clock to deal with the increase in water levels.
The Catalan firefighters have already been answering more than 165 emergency calls.
The majority of such incidents took place in Badalona, where water soon flooded streets and ground-level houses.
The Catalan Meteorological Service issued a warning that a minimum of 100 mm of rain fell on some parts of the region in 24 hours.
In the meantime, the residents have been urged to stay out of all unnecessary travel until the storm is over.
Besides the transport inconveniencing factors, the heavy rains have influenced the business communities and the open spaces.
Most stores were forced to use sandbags in order to prevent water penetration into their stores. But the drainage systems of the city are now overloaded by the massive amount of water.
In the future, weather analysts foresee that the unpredictable weather will continue during the night.
Coming to the next day, authorities will start estimating the scale of the damage to the city’s infrastructure.
The officials encourage all people to avoid bridges, breakwaters, and flooded basements.
