Hidden efforts to bring satellite internet into Iran during blackout

A report by the BBC describes how a hidden network of people are running satellite internet devices into Iran to bypass strict government internet shutdowns. These devices, known as Starlink, allow users to connect directly to satellites instead of relying on Iran’s controlled internet system.

An individual named Sahand on BBC explained that he helps send these devices into Iran despite the risks. He fears that if he is identified, his contacts inside the country could face punishment. The Iranian government has made owning or distributing these devices illegal, with penalties ranging from prison sentences from two years up to ten years.

Additionally, Iran has been experiencing a major internet blackout for over two months. This began after conflict escalated following airstrikes by the United States and Israel on 28 February. Officials claim the shutdown is for security reasons, such as preventing cyber threats and espionage. However, it limited access to independent information, which has left people dependent on state media.

Starlink, operated by SpaceX, paves a way around these restrictions. Each terminal can connect multiple users to the global internet. Sahand says he has already sent about a dozen devices into Iran and continues to look for ways to send more.

Estimates suggest that many of these terminals may already be in Iran, while some are even sold through online platforms like Telegram channels. Black market continues to grow despite strict rules. However, even before the blackout, many people relied on VPNs to bypass censorship.

The government has allowed limited access to certain individuals through special SIM cards and programs like “Internet Pro”. This step is mainly taken to support businesses. Although, the shutdown has caused significant economic losses.

Furthermore, Human rights groups argue that such blackouts restrict freedom of information and expression. According to Access Now, internet shutdowns are increasing globally.

Resultantly, by providing the star link connection, people inside Iran will be able to share real-time information with the outside world, despite the serious risks involved.
