Former cricket captains seek NRO for Imran Khan

Imran Khan NRO

A group of ex-international captains of cricket has made a public appeal asking the Government of Pakistan to ensure an NRO for former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

In a joint statement issued on February 17, the signatories voiced “deep concern” regarding Khan’s reported health condition and imprisonment, demanding immediate medical attention, humane treatment conditions and transparent access to legal counsel.

Humanitarian Appeals or Political Statement?

While the letter avoids direct political language, the tone of the letter is what has caused debate.

By citing the want of dignity, fairness and swift legal processes, critics are arguing the appeal is in effect seeking an extraordinary relief akin to an NRO, a legal mechanism historically associated with political concessions.

The former captains stressed Khan’s status, as a World Cup winning captain and sporting hero all across the world, and says that his treatment should be commensurate with his contribution to cricket and public life.

Among those agreeing with the appeal are former England’s captain, Michael Atherton, and Australia’s Allan Border, Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev and Australia’s Stephen Waugh among others.

The statement presents the issue in terms of sportsmanship and shared humanity as cricket had been a long-time bridge between nations.

It places emphasis on the fact that the appeal is made “without prejudice to any legal proceedings”.

The development is likely to heighten the political debate in Pakistan.

Supporters of Khan accept the letter as both international support for their claims about his treatment, while critics wonder whether sports figures from other countries should be putting their weight on domestic legal issues.

It is very important to note that all of them are foreign players, including players from India. Giving opinions on an internal matter of another country is usually not considered professional.
