Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has filed another application in the Supreme Court seeking an urgent hearing of its contempt of court petition concerning former prime minister Imran Khan’s hospital visit.
The application was filed by Uzma Khan after the Supreme Court registrar’s office rejected an earlier request for an urgent hearing. The plea maintains that Imran Khan’s health is deteriorating while he remains in jail and describes his health and safety as a matter of utmost importance.
According to the application, the authorities allegedly took the PTI founder to PIMS Hospital in violation of the Supreme Court’s order. It requests that Imran Khan be shifted to Shifa International Hospital for a medical examination and treatment.
The plea further argues that the Supreme Court’s August 18 order was deliberately not implemented in its true spirit. It seeks immediate and complete compliance with the court’s directions.
The application states that continued failure to comply with judicial orders amounts to deliberate, clear and unlawful disobedience. It also argues that the case-fixation policy should not prevent an urgent hearing of the contempt matter.
The latest application follows the rejection of an urgent-hearing request on August 25. Uzma Khan has questioned whether the earlier request was actually rejected by the Chief Justice and asked the court to clarify the matter.
The petitioner has requested that the contempt petition be fixed for an urgent hearing during the current week or the following week, citing the seriousness of Imran Khan’s health and the alleged non-compliance with the Supreme Court’s August 18 order.
Earlier, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s sister, Noreen Niazi, met him at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, prison sources said.
According to jail sources, the meeting lasted around 40 minutes and took place in the prison’s conference room. Niazi discussed various matters with Khan during the meeting.
She left the jail after the meeting but did not speak to media representatives waiting outside. Sources said the meeting was Niazi’s second with Khan in the past two weeks. No further details about their conversation were immediately available.
The meeting comes days after Khan was transferred from Adiala Jail to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad for a medical examination.
The former prime minister was moved to PIMS late on August 20 following a Supreme Court order regarding his medical examination. The court had directed the government to arrange his examination at Shifa International Hospital.
The government, however, said it took Khan to PIMS because a large number of PTI workers were present along the route to Shifa International, raising security concerns.
Khan’s sister Uzma Khan later filed a contempt petition in the Supreme Court against the government over the hospital transfer. The court returned the petition on Tuesday after raising an objection.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Information Minister Atta Tarar and others were named as respondents in the petition.
