Seeking NRO: Imran Khan wants out of jail on medical ground, says Bloomberg

PTI founder's detailed medical check-up completed

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has approached the Islamabad High Court seeking immediate release on medical grounds due to eye ailment.

According to a report by Bloomberg Imran Khan has also requested the suspension of his 17-year prison sentence.

The petition states that blood clots have significantly damaged the vision in his right eye requiring urgent examination and treatment by his personal doctors. His legal team says jail authorities have yet to allow full access to private physicians while multiple bail pleas remain pending.

Last week the court directed prison authorities to provide medical care after which doctors examined him in jail on February 15. However PTI leaders have expressed dissatisfaction with the official medical assessment. Government officials maintain that Imran Khan is being provided all medical and legal facilities in accordance with the law.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said that Imran Khan would be shifted to a hospital if required while Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced that a medical report would be submitted to the court. However by the time of publication he had not been transferred to a hospital.

Meanwhile Imran Khan’s sons Qasim Khan and Suleman Khan who live in the UK with their mother Jemima Goldsmith have termed their father’s imprisonment a violation of human rights. In a statement on the social media platform X Qasim Khan said that the loss of vision is a direct result of prolonged solitary confinement. The government has rejected these allegations maintaining that Imran Khan is being provided with all medical and legal facilities in accordance with the law.

It may be recalled that Imran Khan was sentenced in December 2025 to 17 years in prison in the Toshakhana reference for allegedly undervaluing state assets. He is also serving a sentence in another case in which he is accused of acquiring land from a businessman and in return facilitating the transfer of £190 million recovered by the UK’s National Crime Agency.
