Iran's World Cup preparations advance after Mexico visa approval

The Iranian national football team has been issued visas for Mexico ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, paving the way for their preparations for the global tournament.

Mexico will serve as Iran’s base camp during the World Cup, providing the team with a key training and operational hub throughout the competition.

The squad is currently in Turkey and is scheduled to depart for Mexico on June 6.

Although based in Mexico, Iran will play all of its group-stage matches in the United States. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to begin on June 11.

Iran’s ambassador to Türkiye, Mohammad-Hassan Habibollahzadeh, has confirmed that the country’s national football team has received the necessary visas to participate in the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

According to Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, Mexican authorities have issued visas to all players, coaches, and support staff travelling with the national squad, clearing the way for the team’s participation in the tournament.

Earlier, the Iranian Football Federation announced plans to relocate the team’s training camp from Arizona in the United States to the Mexican border city of Tijuana. The federation said the decision was driven by security considerations and uncertainties arising from regional tensions involving Iran.

Iran will use Tijuana as its base during the tournament and will travel to the United States for its group-stage fixtures. Despite the change in preparations, all three of Iran’s opening-round matches remain scheduled to take place in the US.

The FIFA World Cup is set to be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, marking the first edition of the tournament to be staged across three countries.
