The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced that it has verified damage to the entrance structures of Iran’s underground Natanz nuclear facility on Tuesday, following an analysis of newly obtained satellite images.
The agency indicated that “no radiological consequence” was anticipated, and no further impact was observed at the fuel enrichment plant itself.
Satellite imagery reveals points of damage
Satellite images of the nuclear facility reveal damage to three buildings on the premises, providing the first visual confirmation of the effects that US and Israeli strikes have had on Iran’s nuclear program.
According to the imagery, the vehicle and personnel access points to the underground sections of the facility, where centrifuges are housed, seem to have sustained hits.
The Natanz site had previously been targeted last June by the US and Israel, likely rendering it non-operational.
However, in a recent post on X, the IAEA stated that facilities containing nuclear material did not suffer from any damage, only the entrances of the site were hit.
US and Israel target nuclear facility in Iran
Over the weekend, the United States and Israel executed two assaults on Iran’s nuclear facility located in Natanz, as reported by the head of the nation’s nuclear agency on Monday.
Mohammad Eslami stated in a letter addressed to Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), that “the criminal regimes of the United States and Israel, in their pursuit of aggression, have once again targeted the Natanz nuclear site with two brutal attacks on Sunday afternoon,” according to Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agency.
Eslami urged the IAEA to promptly address its inaction regarding attacks on nuclear facilities, stating that the IAEA “must condemn these actions.”
US Israeli war with Iran continues
The Middle East is presently embroiled in a significant military conflict due to coordinated US-Israeli strikes on Iran, which have resulted in the deaths of several high-ranking leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In response, Iran has launched missile and drone strikes throughout the region, targeting US military assets and energy facilities in at least eight nations, including the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar.
