Iranian warship sunk near Sri Lankan coast

An Iranian warship has sunk near the coast of Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan authorities rescued around 32 people on board on Wednesday. An international media outlet confirmed that Sri Lankan authorities recovered several bodies from the sea.

Iranian warship identified as IRIS Dena had sunk near the coast of Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath confirmed in the parliament while addressing.

Several social media reports confirmed that it is suspected that the Indian Navy attacked the Iranian warship near the coast of Sri Lanka.

However, the Sri Lankan defence sources said that it is unclear who attacked the ship.

What did the Sri Lankan Navy spokesperson say?

The Sri Lankan Navy spokesperson said that the report of the death of over 100 people is not correct and is rejected. However, Sri Lankan authorities rescued 32 individuals from the warship.

Sri Lankan officials also confirmed that the injured individuals are being treated at a state-run hospital in the southern port city of Galle.

Sri Lankan Navy spokesperson also stated that the Sri Lankan Navy received an emergency call from an Iranian warship. The Sri Lanka Navy and Air Forces then started a search operation following the emergency call by the Iranian warship.

The Navy’s spokesperson noted that the authorities will investigate the matter of the Iranian ship, adding that there were no other ships or aircraft being noticed near the Sri Lankan coast.

“We are hopeful we can rescue ​more people and will continue (operations) until we are sure,” he said.

It is pertinent to mention that Sri Lanka is a neutral country, but the diplomatic relations between India and Iran are not good.

Similarly, India is supporting Israel in the war between Iran and Israel.
