As the Islamic festival of Eid-ul-Adha approaches, the government of Islamabad has sold six temporary cattle markets of sacrificial animals at an aggregate cost of Rs35 crores, indicating that demand and commercial activity have increased.

The cattle market in Sector I-12 had the highest bid, and was auctioned at Rs20 crore, as per the officials.

The second-highest bid in the market in Sangjani was at Rs6.25 crore and the site close to the Zia Mosque was sold at Rs5 crore.

There were other places that were of great interest to the bidders as well. Cattle market in the Sultana Foundation site was sold at the cost of Rs2.5 crore, and the market in the Japan Road and Bhara Kahu market was given Rs62 lakh and Rs61 lakh respectively.

The officials said the auction saw almost 120 per cent growth over last year, which indicated a higher investor confidence and business activity in relation to Eid-ul-Adha preparation.

There were 104 bidders involved in the process and officials termed it as transparent, competitive and merit based.

In an endeavour to enhance efficiency in cattle markets and curb risks posed by use of cash, all temporary cattle markets have been made cashless.

The authorities are confident that the relocation would bring more convenience and safety to buyers and sellers.

In the meantime, the District Municipal Authority teams have stepped up vigilance in the federal capital to prevent the activity of unauthorised cattle markets.

Authorities threatened to crack down on any illegal establishments to make sure that only legitimate locations can operate during the Eid period.

The temporary cattle markets will serve to curb the crowds and ensure hygienic standards are upheld and the citizens will have a more structured and safe experience at the festival.
