ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has decided to end the existing metropolitan corporation system in Islamabad by dividing the city into three town corporations, after which the city will have three mayors.
The new system proposed will contain three mayors and six deputy mayors, each serving a term of four years. The Chairman of the Union Councils will elect them.
The presidential ordinance has been finalised, which will be sent to the President. The Election Commission will issue a new allocation and election schedule very soon.
According to the media reports, it has been decided that the capital will be divided into three towns on the basis of the three constituencies of the National Assembly.
Under the new local government system, town corporations will possess greater administrative and financial control, while several powers of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) will be transferred to the town corporations in phases.
Moreover, the new local government structure has also proposed the division of 125 union councils among the three towns according to their population.
This major initiative will lead to improvement in the governance and delivery of public services at the local level.
