Jaguar unveils Type 01: Here’s all you need to know

Jaguar has unveiled the Type 01, an all-electric four-door grand tourer that marks the first production model in the British luxury carmaker’s major transformation.

Revealed in New York, the Type 01 is the production version of the Type 00 concept unveiled in Miami in December 2024. The new model retains the concept’s distinctive styling, including an exceptionally long bonnet, a low roofline and a rear-set cabin.

The car features 23-inch wheels and four doors, while a rear-facing camera replaces the conventional rear window, displaying the view behind the vehicle on a digital screen inside the cabin.

Measuring 5.2 metres long and 1.4 metres high, the Type 01 is among the largest vehicles in its segment. Jaguar says it is also the most aerodynamic road car it has produced, with active aerodynamic vanes, a three-stage deployable spoiler and a drag coefficient of 0.23.

Performance and electric range

The Type 01 is built on Jaguar’s dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA) platform and features a three-motor electric powertrain producing up to 1,030ps (1,015hp) and 1,365Nm of torque.

According to the company, the vehicle can accelerate from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in 3.2 seconds. It can also accelerate from 100kph to 180kph in a further four seconds.

The electric grand tourer features a 50:50 weight distribution, all-wheel steering and torque vectoring. Jaguar has also drawn on its Formula E racing programme to support the vehicle’s development.

Despite its high-performance specifications, Jaguar says the Type 01 is designed primarily for long-distance driving, combining powerful performance with the comfort expected of a luxury grand tourer.

The company claims the car offers a driving range of up to 720 kilometres under the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP).

Its 850-volt electrical architecture also supports rapid charging, allowing the vehicle to gain up to 200 miles of range in 13 minutes when connected to a 350kW charger.

Jaguar’s new design direction

The Type 01 represents a major step in Jaguar’s efforts to reposition itself as an exclusive, design-focused luxury brand.

The transformation became public in November 2024 with the launch of the company’s controversial “Copy Nothing” campaign and a new visual identity. The Type 00 concept followed in December, offering a first look at the design direction behind the brand’s reinvention.

With the Type 01, Jaguar is moving away from its previous position in the premium car market and targeting a more exclusive segment of the luxury market.

The vehicle’s styling draws on elements associated with historic Jaguar models, including the E-Type and XJS, while introducing a distinctly modern design.

Its name also reflects the company’s new direction. “Type” references Jaguar’s heritage, “00” represents zero tailpipe emissions, and “01” identifies the first model in its new generation of vehicles.

New York debut and pricing

Jaguar chose New York for the Type 01’s world premiere, displaying the vehicle across digital screens in Times Square, Dumbo and the Lower East Side before presenting it at Storied in West Chelsea.

British actress Florence Pugh was also announced as the first brand ambassador for Jaguar’s new era.

The launch reflects the company’s broader effort to connect with audiences across fashion, art, architecture and contemporary culture as it seeks to attract a new generation of luxury car buyers.

The Type 01 will start at £130,000 (approximately Dh635,000), placing it in a significantly higher price bracket than Jaguar’s previous saloons and SUVs.

Orders are scheduled to open in early 2027, with the first customer deliveries expected in the second half of the year.

The model’s market reception will be an important test of Jaguar’s new strategy as the company seeks to turn the attention surrounding its transformation into commercial success.
