A nine-year heat record for the month of September was broken in Karachi as temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius (°C).
What temperature was recorded in Karachi?
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a maximum temperature of 40.7 °C or 104 degrees Fahrenheit (°F) was recorded at a government weather station in the city on Monday.
Due to the rise in both temperature and humidity levels, the heat index remained several degrees higher.
Monday marked the highest September temperature in the city since 2017. The maximum reached 40.5 degrees Celsius. Thus, the previous nine-year record was surpassed.
Will El Niño hit Karachi?
The Meteorological Department states that the current heatwave will persist, with temperatures likely to range between 36°C and 38°C.
This recent spell of heat is attributed to an atmospheric circulation pattern forming over the Arabian Sea and the active state of El Niño.
‘Karachi weather to get hotter’
Previously, Karachi had already experienced unusually warm weather this month. The PMD had forecast temperatures between 35°C and 37°C for September 15. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 39.5°C a day earlier.
The weather is now expected to remain hot and humid across Karachi over the next three days. The PMD said daytime temperatures are likely to rise during this period.
The maximum temperature could reach 38°C on September 20. It may rise further to around 39°C on September 21.
Hot and humid conditions are expected to continue during the three-day forecast period.
Meanwhile, the PMD’s Flood Forecasting Division said most parts of Pakistan are expected to experience mainly dry weather from September 20 to 26.
A new westerly weather system is expected to affect the upper parts of the country from September 24.
