Residents of several neighbourhoods of Karachi protested against the long hours of power outages, holding a sit-in in front of a K-Electric office in the city to protest against the unannounced outages.
The protest took place outside the power utility’s office, close to Hyderi Market, where residents expressed their discontent about hours-long and unscheduled load shedding.
People from Orangi Town, SITE Area, Frontier Colony, Zia Colony, Metroville, and Bawani Chali participated in the protest.
Religious scholars and prominent people from the affected neighbourhoods also joined the demonstration.
The protestors shouted slogans against K-Electric and demanded immediate action be taken to end unannounced load shedding.
They also wanted the time outages to be minimised and the electricity supply to the affected areas to be restored to more consistent levels.
During the protest, the residents said the outages were occurring more often and for longer periods, making life more difficult.
The disruption was not just impacting households, they said, but was also impacting businesses and other economic activities in the areas.
The protesters complained that people were subjected to long periods of power outages with no information on when they would be back on.
They advised K-Electric to move swiftly to rectify the situation and provide a stable power supply.
The residents also urged the authorities to take overall actions to improve the electricity issue in Karachi and to ease the crisis among the people who are suffering due to recurring electricity failures.
The protesters said they were concerned about the ongoing power outages, stating they were causing major problems for both homes and businesses, and urged that the issue be resolved urgently.
