The Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) has imposed a massive fine on those who violate waste disposal rules.
The fine could range from Rs50,000 to Rs500,000 for individuals and businesses.
Karachi generates more than 14,000 tonnes of municipal waste every day, making stronger enforcement necessary.
The board also aims to educate business owners on waste segregation, recycling and environmentally responsible disposal practices.
The board further proposed establishing designated animal sacrifice sites in every union committee before next Eid ul Azha.
After Eid, sanitation conditions remained poor across large parts of Karachi.
Large piles of garbage accumulated in many localities, while in some places the waste grew into what residents describe as ‘mountains of garbage’, as per reports.
In May, Karachi Port Trust (KPT) removed 16,430 kilograms of solid waste from high-risk harbour areas during its latest weekly clean-up drive.
The recovered waste included plastic debris, floating garbage, organic refuse, and discarded fishing materials, all of which pose risks to marine ecosystems, port operations, and coastal biodiversity, according to the press release.
