Water supply to several Karachi areas may be affected, as power supply to Karachi’s Papri Pumping Station has remained suspended for over 12 hours due to cable theft from the K-Electric system. Electricity to the pumping station was cut off at 9:40am following the breakdown. Despite the passage of more than 12 hours, power had still not been restored. Concerns raised over a major disruption to the city’s water supply.

Officials said around 145 million gallons of water could be affected as a result of the prolonged power outage at the facility.

K-Electric informed the Water Corporation that the outage occurred after a cable supplying power to the pumping station was stolen, cutting off the facility’s electricity connection.

Water Corporation officials said they remained in continuous contact with K-Electric to arrange restoration of power at the pumping station. The spokesperson added that steps would be taken to restore water supply to normal levels as soon as electricity is reconnected. However, no specific timeline was given for when service would resume.

On the other hand, Electricity consumers across Pakistan to face higher prices for power bills as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) considers a request to increase electricity tariffs by Rs1.20 per unit under the monthly Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) mechanism.

The proposed adjustment comes at a time when households are already dealing with rising living costs, making another increase in electricity prices in Pakistan, a concern for consumers nationwide.

According to reports, the proposed increase has been submitted by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) for electricity generated during June. NEPRA is scheduled to hear the request before making a final decision. The additional charge of Rs1.20 per unit will be reflected in consumers’ August electricity bills for one month, upon approval. The increase is also expected to apply to K-Electric customers.
