Punjab and Spain are looking at a plan to open a football academy in Lahore with support from LaLiga for emerging football players in the region, according to reports today.

What would the proposed football academy do?

The proposed academy would train young football players and coaches. It would also bring Spanish football training methods to Punjab.
The plan was discussed during a meeting between Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Spanish Ambassador Carlos Aragon Gil Delaserna.
Under the proposal, Spain’s professional football league LaLiga may work with Punjab to set up a pilot academy in Lahore. The academy would offer professional training to players and coaches.

How will it focus on young football talent?

The academy could give young Pakistani players better chances to improve their skills. They could also learn modern football methods through expert training.
The project is part of wider efforts to improve sports ties between Punjab and Spain. Both sides also talked about working together in trade, business and culture.
Maryam Nawaz said Punjab would welcome Spanish delegations. She also said the province wanted to benefit from Spain’s experience in developing football.
