Lionel Messi turns 39: Football icon celebrates another milestone

Argentina captain Lionel Messi celebrated his 39th birthday, marking another milestone in one of the most successful careers in football history.

Born in Rosario, Messi has established himself as one of the greatest players the sport has ever seen. The Argentine superstar has won every major trophy available, including the FIFA World Cup, Copa América, and an Olympic gold medal.

Widely regarded as a football legend, Messi’s remarkable achievements, records, and longevity continue to set new standards in the game, inspiring generations of players and fans around the world.

When asked about the possibility of playing in the 2030 FIFA World Cup, Messi said that it is still too early to think about it and that he is taking things one day at a time.

He added that he is currently focused on the present rather than the future and will continue playing as long as he feels physically fit and believes he can contribute to the team.

Messi has been in outstanding form at the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026. He scored a hat-trick against Algeria and two goals against Austria, bringing his total World Cup tally to 18 goals — a new record in men’s football.

Defending champions Argentina have already qualified for the knockout stage after winning both of their opening group-stage matches. Messi played a key role in those victories, scoring all five of Argentina’s goals in their 3–0 win over Algeria and 2–0 win over Austria.
