The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has launched an e-driving licence, which will allow users to use their driving licence on their mobile phones instead of a hard copy driving licence.
As part of the KP digital transformation efforts, this initiative was launched by KP Transport Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Technology Board (KPITB), and the Dastak Digital Platform.
The provincial government says the launch of the digital licence will ensure faster, transparent and citizens-friendly public service in line with the objective of Digital Pakistan.
Traffic police, government departments and courts in the country will accept the electronic licence. It also includes a safe QR code which can be used to verify online instantly, helping to stop forgery and maintain driving record authenticity.
The new system removes the need for a physical licence and provides motorists with a safer and more convenient application to replace the hard copy, officials said.
The provincial government said that the launch was another initiative in enhancing the efficient, transparent and technologically-enabled governance in KP.
In another development, to enhance transparency and the enforcement of traffic laws, the Punjab government has introduced a new traffic challan system, which is based on evidence.
The upgraded system will ensure that all traffic challans contain photographs and videos of the traffic offence, which will give motorists a clear record of the offence.
This will be followed by an SMS sent to the drivers who have committed traffic violations, which will have a link to check the images and video footage of their challan, as per a statement from Traffic Police.
All Traffic Tickets in Punjab will be issued via Traffic Police One App with video evidence attached to the ticket. Under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the initiative has been rolled out.
The system aims to minimise conflicts between motorists and traffic police while speeding up and streamlining the challan procedure, DIG Traffic Punjab Muhammad Waqas Nazeer stated.
The evidence-based challans will also bolster legal action against those who don’t pay fine as each case will have verified digital evidence, he added.
The DIG said the use of modern technology is a testament to the department’s effort to provide efficient, transparent, and citizen-friendly traffic services and ensure traffic laws are fairly enforced.
