In a major step affecting intercity travel, the government has reinstated the previous speed limits on motorways and national highways throughout Pakistan. The government has restored the previous speed limits on motorways and national highways across Pakistan.
The new rules mean that cars and other light vehicles will be permitted to go up to 120 kilometres an hour on motorways. Meanwhile, the speed limit for passenger transport and heavy vehicles has been reinstated at 110 kilometres per hour, according to officials.
The previous speed restrictions have also been reinstated on national roads for all types of vehicles, such as private cars, light transport vehicles, passenger coaches and heavy-duty trucks, authorities said.
The Motorway Police said that the speed limits have already kicked in in the country. Although easing the travel of commuters is one of the goals, officials said maintaining a safe road environment is the top priority.
To ensure safer travel on the nation’s road system, motorists have been urged to follow speed limits and traffic laws, wear seat belts and drive responsibly.
Petrol prices reduced
Earlier, the federal government had announced a major reduction in petroleum prices, bringing significant relief to consumers across the country. Petrol prices have been cut by Rs74 per litre, lowering the new price to Rs299 per litre.
Meanwhile, high-speed diesel has been reduced by Rs67 per litre, with the new rate set at Rs311 per litre.
The decision came into effect after tensions between Iran and the United States eased.
Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif said in his address that the federal government, by using 129 billion from the development budget and through austerity measures, provided the people of the country with as much relief as possible from the sharp increase in oil prices.
During his address to the National Assembly in Islamabad on Friday, he said, “We had promised that we would bring the price of petroleum products down and repay each penny to the people”.
