Pakistan’s National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) launched its first-ever Bug Bounty Challenge 2026 on Tuesday, a nationwide initiative aimed at strengthening the security of the country’s digital identity systems.
The competition has been developed in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the National Cyber Emergency Response Team (PakCERT). It brings together students, ethical hackers and cybersecurity professionals to help identify weaknesses in digital systems in a responsible manner.
Focus on cybersecurity and local talent
NADRA officials say the programme is designed to improve confidence in Pakistan’s digital identity infrastructure while encouraging ethical security practices. The challenge is structured as a team-based competition and focuses on advanced security assessment rather than offensive hacking.
Participants have been drawn from selected universities and partner institutions linked with NADRA. Organisers say the goal is to support young talent and give participants hands-on experience in addressing real-world cybersecurity risks.
According to NADRA, the initiative is part of a broader effort to embed security-by-design principles into national digital systems.
Regional rounds
Regional rounds of the Bug Bounty Challenge began on 27 January 2026 and were held at major universities across the country. These included GIKI in Swabi, NUST in Islamabad, UET Lahore, NED University in Karachi, and BUITEMS in Quetta.
Teams at these venues worked under set guidelines to assess systems and report vulnerabilities in a controlled and ethical environment. NADRA has said that attractive prizes will be awarded to top performers, with support from organisations including the Pakistan Digital Authority.
Wider digital reforms
The competition comes as NADRA continues reforms to its national identity system. Recent updates have included the introduction of contactless fingerprints, iris scans and facial recognition as part of identity verification.
Officials say initiatives such as the Bug Bounty Challenge are meant to complement these technical changes by building local expertise and improving oversight.
The concluding ceremony will be held at NADRA headquarters in Islamabad on a date yet to be announced.
