How to register divorce at Union Council: NADRA explains

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has disclosed the easy procedure of registering divorce at the Union Council because registering timely and then updating marital status in NADRA is legally mandatory.

For registering divorce or getting certificate following documents are required: In case of Khula, the Khula as per decree of the court, in case of divorce, the divorce deed issued by the husband and the Photocopy of Identity card of the applicant.

Registration Procedure

For the registration process, one or both parties are required to go to the Union Council Office and submit the application for the registration process.

The staff will check the documents provided and keep them in the register concerned.

According to the law, the Union Council follows the following actions for reconciliation between the parties:

If the documents are valid, the first reconciliation notice is issued in a week, on which the parties have to appear and make their record.

Consequently, 90 days are given for reconciliation. During this time, a second and a third notice is sent after one and two months.

If the reconciliation is unsuccessful by 90 days, the divorce is considered to be established.

Obtaining the Certificate

After completion of the period mentioned, Union Council staff will enter divorce into the computer system and give the applicant a printed copy of the divorce for proof reading.

After checking the details, the staff finishes the official process and gives them a Divorce Registration Certificate, and one copy of it to each of the parties.

NADRA has also made it possible to register divorce at the Union Council, through the Pak Identity mobile application, for the convenience of the citizens.

After receiving the certificate from the Union Council, it is the legal duty of the concerned people to update their marital status in the NADRA database in order to avoid any legal situations in the future.
