NADRA issues nationwide advisory on CNIC renewal

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has urged citizens to renew their Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) before their expiry dates, warning of potential disruptions to essential services.

According to NADRA, failure to renew identity cards on time may result in restricted access to bank accounts, mobile SIMs, and various government and welfare services. Authorities stress that keeping CNICs valid is crucial to avoid inconvenience and service interruptions.

NADRA records show that millions of identity cards and related documents have already expired and require immediate renewal. Citizens are also being reminded through SMS notifications. Additionally, young individuals are advised to apply for their identity cards as soon as they turn 18.

As per instructions from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), having a valid identity card is mandatory for mobile services. SIM cards may be blocked if linked to expired identity cards.

Eight million SIMs active on expired identity cards

Currently, more than eight million SIMs are active on expired identity cards, making timely renewal essential. SIMs registered in the names of deceased individuals may also be blocked at any time; therefore, citizens are advised to transfer such SIMs to their own names.

NADRA has further warned that additional fees and penalties may be imposed for late renewal after June. Citizens can renew their identity cards through NADRA centres, the PakID mobile app, and e-Sahulat services.

NADRA offices to remain closed in Islamabad

The National Database and Registration Authority has announced a two-day closure of its offices in the Islamabad Capital Territory after a local holiday notification issued by the administration.

According to the official notification, all NADRA offices in Islamabad will remain closed on April 9 and 10, 2026, on Thursday and Friday.

The notification stated that its mega centres, which usually operate 24/7, will also suspend services during this period. These centres will close at 8 AM on Thursday and reopen at 8 AM on Saturday.

However, NADRA offices in Rawalpindi will continue functioning as usual, providing an alternative for residents of the twin cities who require in-person assistance.

For those in Islamabad affected by the temporary closure, NADRA has advised that several services will remain accessible through the Pak ID mobile app, allowing users to complete essential tasks remotely.
