At least 161 people have died, and 483 have been injured in the monsoon spell in Pakistan, as the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) recorded the highest death toll in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
The officials of the NDMA said that KP had recorded the highest number of deaths, with 67 fatalities.
Punjab reported 54 deaths, followed by Sindh with 16, Azad Kashmir with 13, Balochistan with eight, Islamabad with two and Gilgit-Baltistan with one.
The latest casualties were reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where heavy rainfall caused buildings to collapse in several areas of Swabi district.
Rescue 1122 said its teams recovered two people alive from one incident, while two others were killed.
The NDMA has warned that further casualties are possible as the current spell of severe weather continues.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said monsoon currents were affecting the upper parts of the country and warned of further heavy rain in several regions.
A westerly weather system was expected to affect northern parts of Pakistan between 17 and 21 August, bringing heavy rainfall to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Parts of south-western Balochistan, including Musakhel, Barkhan, Zhob, Kalat and Khuzdar, could also experience heavy rain, the PMD said.
Authorities have warned residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert as continued rainfall increases the risk of flash floods, landslides and further structural collapses.
Pakistan is highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change and has experienced increasingly extreme weather in recent years.
The country suffered devastating floods in 2022, when record rainfall and melting glaciers killed more than 1,700 people and affected more than 33 million. The disaster caused an estimated $30 billion in economic damage.
More than 1,000 people were also killed by above-average monsoon rains and flooding in Pakistan in 2025, according to official figures.
