The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood alert amid the threat of rising water levels in rivers and storm drains, warning of low to medium-level flooding in mountain streams and drains in Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur.
According to the NDMA, there is also a risk of low to medium-level flooding in seven major cities of Punjab, including Rawalpindi and Lahore. Meanwhile, flash floods are expected in the Bagh and Kotli districts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The NDMA has also released the latest status of water storage in the country’s major dams. Water storage at Tarbela Dam has reached 97.94 per cent, with the water level recorded at 1,548 feet. During the same period last year, water storage at Tarbela stood at 95.98 per cent.
According to the report, water storage at Mangla Dam currently stands at 62.99 per cent, compared with 62.80 per cent during the same period last year.
The NDMA has directed local administrations to deploy resources and rescue teams to vulnerable and sensitive areas in advance to deal with any emergency.
The public has been advised to avoid crossing floodwaters, rivers, and inundated roads. Tourists and commuters have also been urged to stay away from the banks of rivers, streams, and other waterways. The NDMA warned that the risk of landslides and flash floods has increased in mountainous areas. People have therefore been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall or when flood warnings are in effect.
The authority further cautioned that attempting to cross fast-flowing water on foot or by vehicle can be fatal. It also warned that water levels in rain-fed streams and storm drains can rise suddenly to dangerous levels during the monsoon season.
