The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has amended its rules for solar system upto 25 kilowatts (kW).
NEPRA has made amendments in the Solar Regulations 2026, removing the requirement for consumers with solar systems of up to 25 kW to obtain prior approval from the regulator.
Under the revised rules, households and other consumers installing solar systems within the 25kW limit will no longer need to seek a separate licence from NEPRA.
The approval process will instead be handled directly by the relevant electricity distribution companies (DISCOs), which will receive and process applications for such systems.
NEPRA said the changes are intended to simplify the process for consumers and encourage greater use of renewable energy in Pakistan.
Previously, consumers installing solar systems were required to go through regulatory procedures involving NEPRA.
The amended regulations transfer approval authority for systems of up to 25kW to the relevant distribution companies.
This means consumers will be able to deal directly with their local electricity provider rather than seeking separate approval from the regulator.
The changes come as more households and businesses in Pakistan turn to solar energy amid high electricity costs and growing interest in alternative sources of power.
NEPRA said simplifying the approval process would make it easier for consumers to adopt solar technology and support the country’s transition towards renewable energy.
The revised rules apply to solar systems of up to 25kW, while larger installations remain subject to the applicable regulatory requirements.
