New IGP Gilgit

The federal government has appointed Dr Akbar Nasir Khan as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) for Gilgit-Baltistan.

According to a notification issued by the Establishment Division on February 3, 2026, Dr Khan has been transferred from his current position in the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), where he was serving under the Interior and Narcotics Control Division. He is a BS-20 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan.

The appointment has been made under Section 10 of the Civil Servants Act, 1973, and takes effect immediately. The notification was issued by the Cabinet Secretariat and signed by Deputy Secretary Mahmood-ul-Hassan.

The newly appointed inspector general also previously served as IGP Islamabad.

Major appointments by Federal govt

The federal government announced major transfers and appointments on February 3, 2026. As per the notifications issued, Mr Salman Choudhary, who is a BS-21 officer, was directed to immediately report to the Establishment Division. He was serving as Additional Secretary in the Interior and Narcotics Control Division.

As a replacement, Mr Riffat Mukhtar has been appointed as the Additional Secretary to the Interior and Narcotics Control Division. He was previously serving as Director General (DG) of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

The federal government has also issued the appointment notification of the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) in Punjab. Mr Abdul Kareem, a BS-21 officer, has been appointed as Provincial Police Officer (PPO) in Punjab.

While the former IGP Punjab, Dr Usman Anwar, has been transferred and posted as DG of the FIA.

In his Twitter handle, the Federal Minister of Interior and Narcotics Control and the chairperson of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mohsin Naqvi, said, “Dr Usman’s transformational leadership reshaped Punjab Police, setting new benchmarks in professionalism, reform, and public service.”

He added, “As he takes charge as DG FIA, a new era begins. With his vision and dynamism, the public will witness real, visible change in the coming months. Best wishes for this critical national responsibility.”
