Meta has introduced a new virtual reality device designed to look more like ordinary glasses. The company says the device weighs about 100 grams. This makes it much lighter than traditional VR headsets.

The company announced the new Meta VR Glasses on September 23, 2026. Meta says the glasses are designed for entertainment, work, gaming, and immersive experiences. The device combines several VR functions in a glasses-style design.

Meta focuses on a lighter VR design

The New Meta virtual reality glasses weigh roughly 100 grams, which Meta compares to the weight of a deck of cards. The company says this design can make extended use more comfortable.

Unlike traditional headsets, the glasses do not use straps or large hardware around the user’s face. Meta has divided the system into two main parts. The glasses contain the display and sensors. A separate computing puck handles processing, battery power, and storage. Users can keep the puck in a pocket or bag. An optical tether connects it to the glasses.

Meta says this design makes the glasses about five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3. The company is targeting people who want to use VR for longer periods.

High-resolution display and audio

The new glasses feature a 5K Infinite Display based on micro-OLED panels. Meta says the display provides 37 pixels per degree. The device also uses compact pancake lenses. These lenses help provide detailed visuals in the smaller glasses-style form. The glasses support Dolby Vision for enhanced picture quality. They also include Dolby Atmos spatial audio in the frames.

Meta has also built its Meta AI agent into the device. Users can interact with the system through voice commands, eye movements, and hand gestures. Controllers are not required for several functions. Users can open apps, play content, and adjust their workspace through natural interactions.

Designed for movies, sports and work

Meta is positioning the glasses as an entertainment device. It says they will support 3D movies and immersive viewing experiences. The device is the first VR product to receive IMAX Enhanced certification, according to Meta. Disney+ subscribers will also get access to selected 3D movies in supported countries from November. The glasses will also support immersive sports content. Meta says users will eventually have access to more than 100 immersive live sports events each year.

The device also targets professional users. It can create multiple virtual screens for work. Users can turn a flat surface into a keyboard and touchpad. Full-color passthrough lets users see their surroundings while working. This includes nearby objects such as a desk or smartphone.

Gaming and hologram calling

Gaming is another major feature of the device. Meta says more than 75 games will support hand-gesture controls at launch. The glasses will also support Xbox Cloud Gaming. This will provide access to hundreds of additional games through cloud streaming. Meta is also introducing hologram calling with the new glasses. The feature creates a digital version of a person during video calls. The hologram can show real-time expressions and reactions. Meta says it will work with calling services including WhatsApp and Zoom.

But they still include advanced display, computing, audio, AI, and interaction features. The separate puck helps keep the glasses themselves lighter.

Release date and price

Meta says the VR Glasses will go on sale in spring 2027. The announced price is $1,299.99 in the United States. The product represents Meta’s effort to place advanced VR capabilities into a lighter glasses-style device. Its final market impact will depend on availability, software support, and user adoption after launch.
