Web desk: Former Australian batter Nic Maddinson has revealed that he underwent chemotherapy for testicular cancer earlier this year.
The 33-year-old New South Wales opener spent most of 2025 battling health issues after a tumour was removed. He received the diagnosis shortly after playing his last match for the Blues in March.
Maddinson said the cancer was discovered in April after he found a lump. At first, he thought it was a virus, but mentioned it to New South Wales doctor John Orchard during his post-season review.
Scans later confirmed a tumour, and he immediately underwent surgery to remove it.
However, follow-up tests seven weeks later showed the cancer had spread, forcing him to begin nine weeks of chemotherapy.
The treatment ended in July, and Maddinson returned to light training at Cricket NSW headquarters just two weeks later.
“I felt something was wrong and mentioned it during my post-season review,” Maddinson said, thanking medical staff for their support.
The cancer had already spread to his abdominal lymph nodes and lung.
“To know that I caught it probably as early as I could have, and it still spread into other parts of my body, that was scary,” Maddinson told Nine newspapers.
“I just think it’s so important if you have anything you’re worried about, get it checked out,” he added, according to ABC News.
The left-hander missed much of the domestic season but has now resumed full training and hopes to return to cricket before the end of the year.
Maddinson last played for New South Wales in March before his diagnosis. He has represented Australia in three Tests and six T20 internationals, debuting in 2016.
Due to his treatment, Maddinson missed the early part of the 2024–25 season and was absent from the New South Wales set-up.
The left-hander, who has represented Australia in three Tests and six T20Is, last featured for New South Wales in early March before being dropped for the final Sheffield Shield match of the season.
Maddinson, known for his aggressive batting style, is now targeting a return to professional cricket before the end of the year.
