Instagram is testing a new feature for users that would allow them to view content on the platform but prevent them from liking, commenting or engaging in other activities.
According to a technology report, Meta-owned photo-sharing app Instagram is internally testing a feature called Read Only Mode.
Under the feature, users would be able to view posts and other content on Instagram but would not be able to like posts, leave comments, send messages, follow other users or view Stories.
According to media reports, the mode could be aimed at allowing users to browse Instagram in a more limited way, where they would only view content rather than participate in regular social media activities.
Initial reports suggest that the feature could potentially be introduced for users of Instagram Plus, a possible paid subscription service. However, no final decision has been announced in this regard.
An Instagram spokesperson has confirmed that Read Only Mode is currently being tested internally and is not available to the general public. The spokesperson said it is too early to say whether the feature will be officially launched, as the company regularly tests different features.
If introduced, the feature could offer Instagram users a different way to consume content on the platform. However, details about its final form, availability and possible subscription requirements are still awaited.
Earlier, OpenAI confirmed it will retire ChatGPT Atlas, its standalone AI-powered browser, less than a year after its debut, as the company integrates its key browsing and AI agent capabilities into a redesigned ChatGPT desktop app and a new Chrome extension.
Atlas, which launched for macOS in October 2025 as an AI-first browser built around ChatGPT, will officially reach the end of support on August 9, 2026. OpenAI said users will receive transition details through email and in-app notifications ahead of the retirement.
