Electricity bills will rise in November after the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) approved an electricity tariff hike.

NEPRA has approved a Rs2.37 per unit hike under the monthly fuel price adjustment for September. The increase will apply to consumers across the country, including K-Electric users.

The regulator has approved an increase of Rs2.32 per unit in the concessional rate for additional electricity consumption by industrial and agricultural consumers, raising the package rate from Rs22.98 to Rs25.30 per unit

Electricity rates in Pakistan

The current residential base electricity rates per unit in Pakistan (applicable across all distribution companies and K-Electric) range from Rs10.54 to Rs47.20 depending on consumption slabs.

A 200-unit electricity bill in Pakistan typically costs about Rs3,822 to Rs4,021 for a protected consumer. However, for unprotected residential consumers who cross into higher slabs during the peak summer season, running heavy appliances like air conditioners (ACs), refrigerators, and backup UPS systems, bills can easily soar to Rs80,000 or more, especially when heavy usage coincides with high-tariff peak hours.

A standard 1.5-ton inverter AC running for 10–12 hours a day consumes roughly 350 to 450 units a month. Running two ACs, a refrigerator, and a UPS charging continuously can easily push a household’s monthly consumption.

Overall electricity consumption in Pakistan generally drops during the winter as fans and air conditioners are turned off. However, the use of inverter ACs (in heating mode) and traditional electric space heaters can still cause winter electricity bills to spike significantly.
