The Pak–UN International Conference on “Leveraging Space Technology for Early Warning for All (EW4All), Climate Action and Disaster Risk Assessment” continued for its second day in Islamabad. It had the theme “From Risk to Warning: Space-Based Disaster Intelligence.”
What did the day feature?
The day featured technical sessions on disaster risk assessment, satellite-based monitoring, flood forecasting, climate resilience and geospatial technologies.
It also brought together national and international experts to share knowledge and experiences in strengthening disaster preparedness and early warning systems.
Ambassador Khalil Hashmi highlighted Pakistan’s perspective on disaster risk assessment, while Mubashar Hussain from the National Disaster Risk Management Fund (NDRMF), Pakistan, presented Pakistan’s National Catastrophe Risk Modelling (NatCat).
He also underscored the importance of risk-informed planning and evidence-based decision-making.
The technical sessions also featured keynote presentations by representatives of international organisations and space agencies.
It also highlighted global experiences, innovative approaches and the growing role of space-based technologies in disaster risk assessment, climate action and early warning systems.
What else did the session explore?
The sessions also explored the application of space-based technologies in flood risk reduction, glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) early warning, reservoir monitoring, multi-hazard assessment and climate-related disaster management.
International experts shared experiences and innovative approaches from their respective countries to strengthen forecasting capabilities and improve disaster response.
A key highlight was the panel discussion on “Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction – Pakistan Progress,” which examined progress and opportunities for enhancing disaster risk governance through scientific evidence, institutional coordination and geospatial intelligence.
When will the conference conclude?
The five-day conference will conclude on October 31 2026, with a summary of proceedings, presentations on SUPARCO’s Space4Climate initiative, and addresses by participating organisations, to strengthen bilateral cooperation in space technology and climate research.
The conference aims to strengthen international collaboration and promote the practical application of space-based technologies for early warning, climate action and disaster risk reduction.
