Pakistan is set to establish seven National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hubs under the National AI Advancement Initiative. This will mark a major step toward strengthening the country’s digital economy and expanding AI-driven innovation.
The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) will oversee the initiative as part of the broader National AI Policy aimed at developing Pakistan’s artificial intelligence ecosystem.
Location of the AI hubs
The seven AI Hubs will be located in
- Islamabad
- Lahore
- Karachi
- Peshawar
- Quetta
- Muzaffarabad
- Gilgit
These centres aim to promote AI research, innovation and entrepreneurship while creating stronger links between academia, industry and government. Each hub will be equipped with modern office facilities, high-speed internet connectivity and advanced laboratories to support research, and product development.
The government has already issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the establishment of the hubs. Pakistan plans to develop 560 AI startups over the next two years. This will provide entrepreneurs with the resources needed to develop innovative AI products and services.
AI sectors and opportunities
- The AI Hubs will develop AI solutions for healthcare, agriculture, education, fintech and smart cities
- The initiative aims to improve public services through the use of artificial intelligence
- It seeks to increase productivity and innovation across key industries
- The government plans to encourage the wider adoption of AI throughout Pakistan’s economy
- Women will be given greater opportunities to participate in AI programmes
- People from remote areas will also be included in the initiative
- The programme aims to ensure that the benefits of AI and digital innovation are shared more equally across the country
Moreover, each AI Hub will is planned to operate under a one year contract, with the possibility of a one year extension based on performance and achievement of project goals.
Additionally, the programme will organise two national AI hackathons and four AI awareness sessions. These events are expected to promote innovation, strengthen cooperation among entrepreneurs and students, and increase public understanding of artificial intelligence.
