Pakistan has launched a digital Proof of Life Certificate system to make pension verification easier for millions of pensioners.
Previously, many pensioners were required to visit banks every six months to provide proof that they were alive and eligible to continue receiving their pensions. However, now pensioners will be able to complete their Proof of Life verification from home using facial recognition technology and a digital application.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif formally launched the new facility and described it as an important step towards reducing the difficulties pensioners face when completing their regular verification requirements.
Digital verification for pensioners
Prime Minister Shehbaz said using modern technology for pension verification was a major public service. He said helping elderly people and persons with disabilities should not be considered only a routine administrative responsibility but also a service to humanity. The prime minister also stated that the digital facility would benefit both civilian and military pensioners across Pakistan.
The prime minister appreciated the federal ministers, government officials and institutions involved in developing and launching the system. He praised Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Adviser to the Prime Minister Dr Syed Tauqir Hussain Shah and the chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) for their contributions to the initiative.
NADRA’s role in facial recognition and digital identity verification will allow eligible pensioners to confirm their status remotely. In addition, NADRA will provide the Proof of Life verification service to pensioners free of charge.
The initiative is another step towards expanding digital government services in Pakistan by replacing processes that traditionally required people to physically visit government offices or financial institutions.
