Pakistan seeks consular access to youth detained in India

Pakistan has formally taken up the case of a young man from Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) who was detained by Indian forces after reportedly crossing the Line of Control (LoC) into Indian-administered Kashmir.

According to sources, the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi has contacted India’s Ministry of External Affairs, seeking official confirmation of the detention of Zeeshan Ahmed Mir and requesting consular access to him.

Sources said Zeeshan, a resident of Pain Kadi area near Muzaffarabad, allegedly crossed into the Uri sector of Indian-administered Kashmir to meet a woman with whom he had developed a relationship through social media.

Following his detention, Pakistan raised the matter through diplomatic channels. The Pakistani High Commission has asked Indian authorities to provide details regarding Zeeshan’s condition and legal status and allow consular officials to meet him.

Indian media reported that soldiers deployed in the Silikot area of the Uri sector spotted a young man crossing the LoC at around 9:30 am on Sunday and detained him upon entering Indian-administered territory.

During questioning, the detainee identified himself as Zeeshan Ahmed Mir, son of Lal Din Mir, and presented a Pakistani national identity card that reportedly confirmed his identity.

According to Indian media reports, Zeeshan told investigators that he crossed the heavily guarded border to meet Iram Bano, a resident of Uri.

He said the two first connected through social media and remained in contact online before he decided to cross the border. Indian authorities said both Zeeshan and Iram Bano are being questioned by security agencies.

Officials are also examining their mobile phones and digital communications to verify the nature of their relationship and the circumstances surrounding the border crossing.

Sources said Pakistan is closely monitoring developments and remains in diplomatic contact with Indian authorities regarding the case.
