El Niño is back in 2026?

Before this, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) had warned about changes linked to El Niño. The weather pattern has now returned and could become stronger during 2026.
The WMO expects El Niño to reach a very strong level before its peak near the end of the year. It also says there is almost a 100 per cent chance that the weather pattern will continue until February 2027.
El Niño happens when ocean water in the central and eastern tropical Pacific becomes warmer than usual. This warming can affect the atmosphere and weather in many parts of the world.

What changes could El Niño bring?

One major effect could be higher temperatures. The WMO expects most land areas to have a greater chance of temperatures above the normal level from September to November 2026.
Rainfall patterns could also change. Some areas may receive more rain and face a higher risk of flooding. Other regions could face less rain and drought.
The WMO expects wetter than normal conditions in parts of East Africa, Central Asia, Southern Europe, western North America and southeastern South America.
