Shai Hope’s unbeaten 162 guided the West Indies to a five-wicket victory over India in the third ODI at the PCA International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh on Saturday. Chasing 352 for victory, the West Indies suffered an early setback when John Campbell was dismissed. However, Amir Jangoo steadied the innings with a fluent 67 off 56 balls and built an important partnership with Hope.
After Jangoo’s dismissal, Sherfane Rutherford contributed 24 off 25 balls, while Keemo Paul kept the chase on track with a quick 44 off 35 deliveries. Hope remained firmly in control at the other end, while Gudakesh Motie provided further momentum with aggressive batting, including a productive over against Anshul Kamboj in the 48th over.
India struggled to make regular breakthroughs despite wickets from Mohammed Siraj, Gurnoor Brar, Kuldeep Yadav and Naman Dhir. Hope’s composed innings ultimately proved decisive as the West Indies completed the successful chase with five wickets in hand.
Earlier, India posted 351 for seven after recovering from a poor start. KL Rahul led the recovery with a blistering 129 off 80 balls, smashing 10 fours and two sixes. His century was the second-fastest ODI hundred of his career, behind his 62-ball century against the Netherlands at the 2023 ODI World Cup.
India lost captain Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli cheaply, but Rohit Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad steadied the innings with a crucial partnership. Sharma narrowly missed out on a century, scoring 92 off 85 balls with 10 fours and three sixes.
The innings also saw Sharma reach another milestone as he became the fourth opener in ODI history to score 10,000 runs at the top of the order. Gaikwad made 57 off 69 balls, while Naman Dhir and Anshul Kamboj added late runs with scores of 30 off 21 and 17 off nine, respectively.
For the West Indies, Jayden Seales was the standout bowler, claiming three wickets for 62 runs. He removed Gill and Kohli early and continued to trouble the Indian batting lineup. Keemo Paul picked up two wickets, while Gudakesh Motie took one.
