At least 21 children died on Thursday after the roof of a private school collapsed in Peshawar’s Dir Colony, while more than 40 people were injured, officials said.
The administration of Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) initially reported four deaths but later confirmed that 21 bodies had been brought to the hospital. Hospital officials also said that 20 injured children were receiving medical attention.
The body of a female teacher was also brought to the hospital following the incident, according to the LRH administration.
Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Dr Mian Saeed said that more than 40 people had been injured in the roof collapse.
Rescue officials said several children were trapped beneath the rubble after the school roof gave way. Rescue teams launched an operation to search the debris and recover children and school staff who might still be trapped.
Meanwhile, Samar Haroon Bilour, adviser to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor on Information and Public Relations, expressed grief over the incident and directed authorities to ensure the provision of the best possible medical facilities to the injured children.
